The spread betting odds were close before the first ball was thrown in arguably the most anticipated Super Bowl in history. Spread betting lines at Bet365 and other bookies were set at +3 and -3, with the bookies favoring the defending champions to clinch back to back titles. The bookies may have expected a close game, but Tom Brady had other ideas. After a glittering career with the New England Patriots that saw Brady clinch six Super Bowl titles, the 43 year old veteran outshone his Kansas City counterpart, Patrick Mahomes, who at 25 is young enough to be his son. Brady rolled back the years to throw three touchdown passes to zero from Mahomes, but it was the number of penalty yards that proved decisive in an awful 2nd quarter display from the Chiefs, who just couldn’t cope with the Buc blitz.
Bucs blitz defense proves too much for Mahomes
The game panned out as a classic irresistible force versus immovable object example. Tampa’s blitz defense is one of the best in the game, and proved too good for their opponents during the postseason, when the Buccaneers beat three division winners on the road to reach the Super Bowl. Those victories included wins over the Green Bay Packers and New Orleans Saints, two early season favorites to go the distance. Although Mahomes is one of the best in the game in beating a blitz defense, the Bucs put so much pressure on the “The Kid” he barely had a chance to get his balls out to his receivers. Those he did were stretching and either intercepted or fumbled, the most agonising example of which was a superb acrobatic throw from Mahomes down the line in the 4th, released when he was practically on the floor following yet another blitz attack from the Bucs.
Brady beats bookies bets with GOAT display
Patrick Mahomes became the first half billion dollar player in NFL history when he signed a mammoth 10 year deal at the Chiefs in July, following his imperious performance last season to become the youngest ever MVP. But Brady’s calm under pressure – aided by Tampa’s imperious defense that gave him the time and space in which to manoeuvre – means that he retains his GOAT status. The “Kid” still has a lot to learn, and with Brady aiming for the darting runs of former Patriot team-mate Rob Gronkowski and free agent Leonard Fournette, each of whom went over the line to score, Super Bowl LV showed that you don’t need to teach old dogs new tricks when the ones he’s got in his locker are more than capable.
Hardly any pundits on NFL shows or betting previews around the world called the game for Tampa, with most predicting a close, high-scoring game. As reigning champions it was no surprise to see the Chiefs run out as favorites, priced variously at -145 (1.69) to Tampa’s +145 (2.45). The pre match odds boosts from online bookies like Betfair Sportsbook revolved around how many yards both quarterbacks would return, with prices competitive around the 800 yard mark! Only Brady came close to fulfilling those promises, with the Bucs defense coming out on top and proving that football is truly an all-round team game. And there is only one GOAT. For a little while, at least. If Mahomes can keep playing at the same level for as long as Brady, he has a chance to challenge the seven nugget champion. But Brady’s evergreen performance in Super Bowl LV proved that will be no easy feat.
