Following its hugely successful broadcast of the 2020 Rocket League European Spring Series, the BBC is set to broadcast the Rocket League Championship Series X (RLCS X), which kicks off on 9th January 2021.The tournament, which will be the BBC’s first esports coverage of the calendar year, will air on BBC Sport online, on BBC iPlayer and live in the app. Major online bookies like Bet 365 are already offering odds on match lines, match winners and props, with top teams like Redemption, Liquid and Singularity set to do battle over the course of the tournament.
Esports has boomed on the BBC in 2020. The world’s oldest and largest national broadcaster began esports coverage in 2019, ramping up its coverage in 2020 to include the Rocket League European Spring Series, League of Legends NLC and UKLC and CS:GO Blast Fall Final. The Blast Fall Final was the last qualifier for teams to stake a spot in the Blast Premier CS:GO Global Final, taking place on the 19th – 24th January.
This season Rocket League moves away from League Play format to instead stage a series of events that will culminate in the Rocket League World Championship in May 2021. The RLCS X Winter Split sees David Beckham’s Guild Esports team, founded in 2019, take its Rocket League bow and take on the likes of Singularity, giving the chance for star player Scrub Killa to take on his old team as they aim to secure a spot in the winter major.
Esports betting set to take over online sportsbooks in 2021
Esports betting is on the rise, growing on average by 39% every year. Esports attracts not just gamers but also fans of mainstream sports like football, with some football clubs in the UK boasting their own esports team. One such team is Wolves Esports, the professional gaming arm of Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, who join the likes of PSG, Barcelona and Schalke with esports arms.
Just as football attracts punters from across the globe, esports fans have plenty of appetite to place bets on their favourite franchises, betting on player props, moneyline bets and map scores. The World Sports Betting Esports Betting Guide offers in depth guides to esports betting, detailing the most popular esports, the most common bets to place and the best kinds of esports to follow.
While esports betting numbers pale in comparison to traditional sports betting ($343million bet on esports in 2020 is only a fraction of the $85billion bet across traditional sports) the numbers of esports fans placing bets on esports matches is set for a record breaking year. As coverage of esports becomes more mainstream, more bets are set to be placed on more markets. This includes the Rocket League Championship Series X, which is sure to attract even more bets thanks to its broadcast on the BBC.
